Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at contact@marshallfireandrescue.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

For Firefighters or EMT's we are flexible and can work with almost any schedule. Some of our members who live close to the station operate as "home response" by driving to the firehouse when a call comes in. If you do not live close to the firehouse/EMS station then you can run a "duty crew" which involves being at the station for a set period of time on a given day or night. Support members can help with fund raising, organizing the calendar/events, office duties, recruitment and more. All members, whether first responder or support, are expected to attend meetings once a month (first responders also have a drill once a month) and keep up to date with certifications as needed.

The answer depends on what academy you sign up for and which certifications you'd like to obtain. Typically the Fauquier County Volunteer Fire Academy takes six months to complete and classes are usually held two nights a week plus one full day on the weekend for the six month duration. The EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) Academy is typically four months long with two nights a week plus one full day on the weekends during the four months of training.

For First Responders:

  • Personal Property Tax (PPT) reduction on one vehicle registered in your name (must meet minimum requirements each year for staffing or running calls)
  • PPE - Personal Protective Equipment. You will be issued all PPE required to perform your duties.
  • Free training and nationally recognized certifications such as Pro Board Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazmat Awareness and Operations, EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate/Advance, and EMT-Paramedic, Pro Board Emergency Vehicle Operator I-III, Driver Pumper Operator, and more.

For ALL members (support or first responder):

  • Station shirt/uniform and additional apparel as available
  • CPR Certification
  • Opportunity to make a difference in your community!

*Disclaimer: Benefits and incentives are subject to change due to changes in laws/rules/regulations within the state of Virginia, Fauquier County and Marshall Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
